General
The USA has long been the international benchmark for men's Olympic basketball. The American team, which since 1992 has included players from the NBA, the world's strongest league, has taken gold in 12 of their 15 Olympic Games participations. The 'Dream Team' has earned an overall win-loss record in Olympic play of 114-5 but the team's most recent Olympic result, a bronze in Athens, was the team's worst ever performance.

The team lost more games at the 2004 Olympic Games than it had lost in all previous Olympic competitions combined. This, in addition to a bronze medal at the 2006 World Championships in Brazil, has put the American team under immense pressure to perform in Beijing. The task has been made even more difficult as the team has been unsettled in the past years. After the Athens debacle the powers of USA basketball decided that all national team players must commit two years to the team, taking their involvement to the end of the 2008 Olympic Games. This request forced several veteran players, like Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett, to rule themselves out of the team leaving head coach, Mike Krzyzewski, to rebuild.

The 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney was the last time team USA won a gold medal, it was the third consecutive success for the Americans after they won gold in Barcelona and Atlanta. In Beijing the team will again have no shortage of talent, with the trio of NBA superstars, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade leading the team from the front. With support coming from dominant big men Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh the USA should again be the team to beat.
